One of a
Kind New Temperature Technology Transforms Dairy Herd Health
Management
Coeur d’Alene
-- September 27, 2004
Changing and
improving on decades old methods of managing dairy cow health,
MaGiiX Corporation (www.magiix.net)
has started sales and installations of its revolutionary new cow
temperature monitoring technology. This month the MaGiiX system was
installed and is operating on three dairy farms in southern Idaho.
This MaGiiX temperature technology will allow farmers to instantly
and accurately monitor the temperature of their cows which leads to
increased milk production, better herd health and management.
According to
Len Wallace, President and founder of MaGiiX, “Using this system can
increase milk production while reducing labor costs. The bottom line
is more dollars income per cow and less time managing herd health.”
The many
potential benefits of monitoring herd temperature were restricted by
the inconvenience and time intensive method of taking cow
temperature. Until now, dairy farmers had no method to easily and
regularly monitor the temperature of their herd. Each of the current
methods meant isolating every cow.
The MaGiiX
system utilizes cutting edge and reliable technology to obtain the
temperature of each dairy cow up to four times per day with no
additional effort by the farmer. The data is automatically recorded
on the internet. And this data is easily accessible by the farmer
and is used to aid in herd health management and to increase milk
production. The software and related web site is developed and
maintained by another North Idaho company – KeyComm (www.keycommunications.com).
Herd health is
improved by the farmer being alerted immediately of a cow with a
high or low temperature via cell phone alert, email alert or the web
site. Historical data for each cow is recorded and checked for
possible scenarios to better manage cow health.
The ability to
immediately flag cows with ailments or active estrus cycles will
directly result in higher bottom line yields because of higher milk
production while lowering the manual labor costs currently used to
search for health issues and estrus detection.
Specifically,
the benefits include improved detection of the estrus cycle, early
detection of ailments effecting milk quality, fresh cow temperature
monitoring, and early detection of heat stress, on-set of calving,
automatic herd checks and includes a lifetime magnet to prevent
hardware disease.
The MaGiiX
system utilizes a Rumen Bolus which is a magnetic RFID transponder
that resides in the cow's reticulum, transmitting the animal's
temperature and a unique ISO-ID number while collecting metallic
objects to prevent hardware disease.
Cow
temperature, ambient temperature, ambient humidity and unique ID are
recorded automatically each time the animal walks past our readers;
generally as cows exit the milking parlor.
Another
benefit of this system is the ability to track a cow’s history and
location with guaranteed accuracy. The bolus stays in the reticulum
for the life of the cow. This permanent aspect of the system allows
for immediate look up of any cow which now offers a more robust and
reliable ability to find the location and history of a diseased or
suspect cow.
The bolus is
administered using a standard balling gun and requires no batteries,
so it provides lifetime, maintenance-free operation.
Over the lifetime of the cow the MaGiiX Rumen Bolus will pay for
itself many times over in the form of improved animal health, lower
artificial insemination costs, higher productions, and reduced
labor.
